Review of the Finn World Masters 2010 in Split

First of all I hope all Finn Masters with their families and friends returned home safely after a fantastic Championship in Split.

I will remember this year’s event as a very good one, because we had good temperatures, lots of sun, winds for everybody (except on the Tuesday, where pool billiard was more favorite than sailing), good food, good beer and wine and, very important, a professional Race Committee. Our International Race Officer, Mr. Alen Kustic, did a great job, however sometimes we thought he was crazy, but in the end his decisions always appeared to be the right ones.

We had a Championship where all sailors had the opportunity to meet their favorite wind forces: the ones who are very skilled in light winds and those who like to hike hard and fight the elements.

We also had a good meeting on the Wednesday, with good input from the sailors and with good discussions which were leading to, in my opinion, good decisions. You will be able to read the minutes of the meeting on this website within short.

As I said during the prize giving ceremony, I had discussions with the organization in Split, but the result counts and I am very satisfied about this result.

Again I thank all people from Labud Sailing Club who made it possible for us to sail this Championship in Split and I hope they had as much pleasure in organizing it as we had competing in it.

One thing I have to mention: I was impressed about the safety, communication and security plan. The organization had sufficient recue and medical boats on the water, complete with AED, medication, divers and doctors. Very well organized. About communication: have you ever seen a huge cruise ship changing its course more than 90 degrees in order to avoid crossing our racing area! I never did, but now I know in Split it’s possible.

Keep your eye on this website and you’ll stay informed about next year’s Finn World Masters in Punta Ala, Italy.

Happy sailing for the rest of 2010,

Fons van Gent
