4. Report Fons’
visit to Split February 13th till 16th
Publication date: February 16, 2010
From Saturday February 13th till Tuesday 16th I visited Labud Sailing Club in Split again.
After a period of not feeling well about the communication I proposed a new visit, because, in my opinion, there were a lot of things to be discussed, like the spirit, the accommodation, new scoring system, website and many other things.
I was glad to be informed that now there is one responsible person within the club for our Masters Championship and this is Mr. Ivan Kuret.
We had three meetings during my visit with all people responsible for their part of the event.
Items we discussed were i.e.: Notice of Race, new scoring system, jury/measurement, website, security (on the race course and ashore), communications, the scoring programme (ZW-scoring), courses, accommodation. One of the people I met was our Principal Race Officer, Mr. Alen Kustic, who is a very experienced Race Officer.
After the meetings it was good to conclude that a lot of things are under control now and after months of being unhappy about the progress I am very satisfied now about the actions the people of Labud Sailing Club have been taking and will take in the coming months.
All my faith in a good Finn Masters World Championship is back now.
On the event website http://www.jklabud.hr/finn-world-masters-2010 there is an entry list now. You can also reach it through the button “Masters 2010” on the Master’s website you are on, now.
The Notice of Race will be published around February 22, after I discussed, with Richard Hart, a few things about the new scoring system, which came up during our meetings.
At this moment, February 16th, (I am still in Split) there are already 63 entries from 18 countries.
I kindly invite all of you to enter as soon as possible and come to Split in May. The venue is splendid and the sailing is good. Also the accommodations are ok and, as I experienced myself, the food is very good.
So: I hope to meet many of you in Split from May 21st until May 28th.

(Vice-) President Finn Masters’ Fleet.

5. New Scoring System
Latest news about the new Scoring System
After half a year with a lot of discussions, thinking, discussing again and again and, finally, taking decisions, we came to a new Scoring System for the Finn World Masters. Many Finn Masters gave their comments and even a few International Judges and the creator of a scoring programme for sail regatta’s were involved. So we were sure we had a good working system.
But: while visiting Split, mid February, it was discussed again with people who were not involved from the beginning. And there one of them found a bombshell in the system!
Scoring 1/2 or 1/3 points in the Final race would create a great unfairness.
When a sailor is, after the last race before the Final race, 1 point behind his major competitor, he must finish in the Final race, (when we sail in 3 groups) at least 3 places ahead of his competitor to beat him. This looks not very fair and indicates that the 1/2 or 1/3 points system for the Finals appeared not to be a good system.
So, the final decision was not to use this system and subsequently abandon the Final race, but sail a series of Heats with an end result.
What
remains new is the allocation in Colour Groups for each racing day. In the past
we were used to sail in the same group against the same competitors in our group
for the whole week, but now you sail in a different group with different
competitors each day.
This gives a better competition than we had in the past.
These groups will, for 2010, be created randomly, direct after having closed the Registration on Sunday May 23rd. This means that every competitor knows on the Sunday evening which colour group he will sail in on each day of the Championship.
To inform you about the whole format I place hereunder the NOR paragraphs concerning the Scoring and Format.
I sincerely hope this format will satisfy all of us and that we will have a fair and competitive Finn World Masters in Split.
